Manafort’s Home Raided By FBI

This morning the Washington Post reported that back on July 26th Paul Manafort’s home was raided by the FBI in connection with Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign. The raid occurred in the morning before dawn where agents showed up without warning at Manafort’s home and presented him with a search warrant. The report claims that the agents gathered documents and othepaulr sources have indicated that their primary interest was in finance and tax records.

The fact that Manafort got raided by the FBI is not surprising. Manafort has a long career of working with pro-Russian politicians, oligarchs with ties to Putin, and other unsavory international villains. His connection to the Trump campaign has – from the start – been a glaring red flag and it was never in any doubt that the investigation will end up casting a net over him.

During the earlier iterations of the Trump campaign during the 2016 election Paul Manafort served as the campaign’s chairman and was instrumental in helping to organize the apparatus that would ultimately become the Trump campaign as we saw it during the general election. Manafort’s already suspicious work history in relation to the Trump campaign was made all the more alarming when it was revealed that he was one of the attendees during the June 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the new report is the fact that we’re only hearing about this raid now, several weeks after it happened. Obviously this kind of discreet operation is well within the operating style of Robert Mueller and his team but it’s not like Donald Trump to play passive.

The fact that this fairly explosive development didn’t receive an immediate Twitter outburst and a temper tantrum where Trump decried the investigation as a “witch hunt” is very telling. Either Trump did not know that the raid had occurred or whatever they took from Manafort’s home was damning enough that Trump and his team felt like silence was the best option.

We probably won’t know the answer to that question for weeks or months to come but it’s curious that Trump tweeted the following only hours after the raid occurred.
